Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt and generally cause a lot of discomfort.

When is the ideal time to remove wisdom teeth?

The best time to remove them is before the tooth formation has completed. This is generally from 14 to 17 years of age. This time frame is associated with the best healing and least side effects. As the older we get, the more difficult it becomes.

How long is the healing period?

The initial healing of the acute phase takes about 7 days. The age as well as the severity of the impacted teeth does have an influence on this healing period. A dull awareness can be present up to 14 days and complete healing has usually taken place by 6 weeks. Some cases may present with a bit of cold sensitivity up to three months.

What are my options?

Wisdom teeth can be removed in the chair (if not complicated), under sedation, or under general anaesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss these options with each one’s pros and cons in detail. Depending on your individual case the best options will be recommended.

What if I do not remove my wisdom teeth?

Common complications of wisdom teeth can range from headaches, localized pain and inflammation around the tooth (pericoronitis), cyst formation as well as pressure on the other teeth that can cause malalignment.
